Start and manage investigations

Start an investigation

To start an investigation, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Drilldown app with the item that you want to include in an investigation.

  2. Select the panel, if needed.

  3. Click the menu icon (three dots) in the top-right corner of the panel.

  4. In the menu that opens, click Add to investigation.

    The item is added to a new investigation or to an investigation you have open at the time.

  5. (Optional) Add comments to the item.

  6. To add other relevant Grafana page URLs to the investigation, follow these steps:

    • With the Investigations sidebar open, navigate to the page you want to add.
    • Click Add this page in the sidebar.

    A link is added to the investigation items, and you can add comments like any other item.

  7. (Optional) Click Add investigation summary to add updates during the investigation or a summary once it’s a complete.

  8. (Optional) To add a descriptive title, click Set title, enter the title, and then click Save.

    Having a meaningful title allows you to use the investigation in the future.

Manage investigations

To manage a previously created investigation, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Open AI assistants and sidebar apps (sparkle) icon in the top-right corner of Grafana:

  2. Click Investigations.

  3. Select the investigation for which you want to make updates.

  4. Take any of the following actions:

    • Add more items - Add the item visualization.
    • Add current page - Add a link.
    • Add or update comments - Add or update the summary or comments for any item.
    • Update the title - Update the title field by either clicking Set title or the edit icon (pen).
    • Reorder items - Use the handle in the top-left corner of items to drag and drop them into the order that best tells the story of the investigation.
    • Remove items - Click the trash can icon in the top-right corner of an item to remove it from the investigation.
    • Delete investigation - Click the menu icon (three dots) in the top-right corner of an item and click Delete investigation in the menu.

You can also delete an investigation from the Investigations list by clicking its trash icon.
